The Key to Elgar’s Enigma?
With my ongoing exploration of Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, I stumbled upon that well-known ‘dark’ theme.
Once carefully phrased over Nimrod, it seems to invite further research! A contrapuntal and dramaturgical
experiment with a dark liturgical motif.
“A dark saying – a theme everyone knows, yet is never heard.”
Is it ‘the’ key to the whole Enigma? (I can already hear Elgar laughing up his sleeve.)
